3rd Seatrade All Asia Cruise Convention - A resounding success in Shanghai

Seatrade All Asia Cruise
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012
The 3rd Seatrade All Asia Cruise Convention came to a close last week, following a three day conference, two day showcase exhibition and travel agent training programme, each focussing on Asia’s on-going development within the cruise industry.

Throughout the three days, 26-28 September, delegates and exhibitors from 30 countries gathered at the iconic Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal to hear 50 industry experts discuss the way forward for Asia’s cruise market in the conference sessions.

Asia’s progress, prospects and potential

Last year more than 20m people cruised worldwide, a figure projected to grow to 23m in 2015. At the moment, Asia Pacific accounts for around 8.5% of that total, showing there is great potential here.

Whilst the cruise lines complimented Asia on their homeport facilities, it was widely thought that many destinations are underdeveloped and there is a pressing need for long term planning with a global view. Other operational challenges facing the cruise industry within Asia range from immigration procedures to shore excursions and port costs. Cruise line speakers suggested that Asian ports need to develop one association with one voice to address opportunities and challenges for the future.

A session on new itineraries and destinations delved into the visitor experience, how investments and regulatory changes are opening new opportunities, port developments and the differing preferences of Western and Asian cruisers. While Western cruisers prefer longer itineraries, Asians prefer shorter, port-intensive cruises, in keeping with their limited vacation time. Asians also favour iconic attractions and shopping.

With European shipyards and suppliers currently dominating the market, speakers discussed Asia’s role within these sectors and highlighted how cruise lines need suppliers from countries that have easy immigration processes and minimal regulatory or import restrictions. They urged Chinese authorities to reconsider the blanket 17% VAT and reduce it at least in certain categories of goods, such as groceries and whatever is consumed in port. Cruise lines spoke of the need to introduce Asian competition to get the attention of the European suppliers who are quality wise, on top of their game, but need a wake up call.

Speakers during the shipbuilding session spoke of how China is close to entering the cruise ship new build market. Asian shipyards are keen to learn and will catch up very quickly and whilst cruise ship design may well stay in Europe for the next 10 years, it’s likely construction will shift to Asia in the near future.

Seatrade Chairman Chris Hayman ended the conference stating “Asia offers great opportunities for the entire cruise industry and it is evident based on discussions at this event we are on the threshold of exciting times”.

Travel Agent Training and Showcase Exhibition

Running alongside the conference was a two-day complimentary travel agent training programme which saw a record breaking 350 local travel agents attend. The training conducted in Chinese was presented by a team of industry experts from Costa, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, Star Cruises and MSC Cruises. The sessions were split into two, entry level and mid-advance level to ensure each travel agent gained valuable information on promoting and selling the lucrative range of cruise products. The training session was organised by the Shanghai International Cruise Training Centre - the tri-party collaboration between Seatrade Cruise Academy, the Shanghai Tourism Board and Asia Cruise Association.

In the showcase exhibition, both international and Asian brands from all sectors were represented from cruise lines including Costa Crociere SpA, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and Star Cruises, to cruise ports and destinations, shipbuilders and many more. In total 49 companies exhibited at the event, showing how important the Asian cruise market is worldwide.

Cruise lines, delegates and exhibitors were treated to a warm Shanghai welcome reception at the Hyatt on the Bund and a spectacular farewell dinner at Club Panorma, which overlooked the Huangpu River, providing exceptional viewing of the Huangpu River Cruise Parade and Fireworks Display.

The Seatrade All Asia Cruise Convention will return in 2013, look out for dates to be announced soon.

The 3rd Seatrade All Asia Cruise Convention has been organised by Seatrade in association with Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, Shanghai Municipal Hongkou District People’s Government and Shanghai International Port Group Ltd, and was sponsored by Costa Crociere, Germanishcher Lloyd SE and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. The Asia Cruise Association, Asia Cruise Terminal Association, Passenger Shipping Association, Shanghai International Conference Management Organisation, Shanghai Municipal Transport and Port Authority and Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal supported the event.

Welcome to Ha Long City

Halong Bay
Halong Bay
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012
Ha Long is the capital city of Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. The city mainly lies on Bai Tu Long Bay, which is part of the Ha Long Bay. It is located at about 160 km northeast of Hanoi. There are four main wharfs in Ha Long: Bai Chay, Tuan Chau, Hon Gai and Hoang Gia.

The city features a typical coastal climate. There are 2 distinct seasons every year, winter from November to April and summer from May to October. The annual average temperature is 23.70C. In the summer, the figure may reach 34 or 38C. In the winter, the temperature may be down to 14C. The average rainfall is high and unevenly distributed in two seasons. Summer rainfall accounts for 80-85% of the total annual rainfall. The highest rainfall is in July and August. Winter is the dry season, accounting for 15-20% of annual rainfall. The least rainfall is in December and January. The average humidity is 84%. Ha Long is a closed sea area that is less affected by hurricanes.

Ha Long city is divided into two parts: East Ha Long and West Ha Long. The eastern part – Hon Gai, where most of the official buildings and industry are concentrated, is connected with the western part – Bai Chay, considered to be more of a tourism attraction. The considerable differences between the two elements, and their separation by a busy vehicle ferry crossing the Cua Luc estuary, made them uneasy bedfellows at first, but time and the imminent construction of a bridge is bringing them together. Although some of the coal mines and associated heavy industries have been moved further east, the commercial nature of Hong Gai is immediately evident. It bustles with life, and is a good example of Vietnam’s emerging industrial cities. A stroll around the market and port is pleasant and informative.

The city's economy has recently switched from coal mining to tourism, due to the large amount of visitors drawn by the famous Ha Long Islets every year. At present, Ha Long is experiencing rapid growth not only in tourism sphere, but as a place upon the main road to southern China. In 2007 Vietnam-China Business Forum, a $400 million deal was signed to build a highway linking Ha Long, Mong Cai and Quang Ninh. There are a huge number of good quality hotels in Ha Long city and plenty of budget accommodation, two hospitals and several private medical centers.

Ha Long City is famous for many tourism attractions. The Hanoi – Ha Long journey just takes about 2.5 hours. The city’s pride is its location facing the World Heritage Area of Ha Long Bay. The main access point is a purpose built wharf to the west of Bai Chay. Its location means that the large numbers of day-trip visitors by-pass Ha Long City altogether, thus depriving the local community of much-needed income. In the south of the city lies Bai Tho (‘Poem’) Mountain, whose name is derived from the several verses carved into its almost vertical seaward face by famous kings and poets. The limestone peak is rich in bio-diversity and offers stunning views of the bay and the red backs of sea eagles swooping below. It's also steeped in Vietnamese culture, not only for its role in wars and conflicts through the ages, but also for its religious associations. There are also such places of interest as Cua Van Fishing Village, Hoang Gia Park, Ha Long Market, Bai Chay Trading Center, Quang Ninh Museum, Vietnam-Japan Cultural House, Children's Cultural House. Almost invariably, it is highly recommended for visitors to spend a 2-night trip on a well-equipped 4-star cruise on Ha Long Bay, to spare time visiting famous fishing villages or to take a Ha Long Kayaking.

Recently, Ha Long has been the second locality in Vietnam providing free-of-charge Wi-Fi services after the central city of Hoi An. Over 40 wireless transmitters were installed along National Highway 18A in Ha Long City to supply free Wi-Fi services. Tourists and residents are now able to access free Wi-Fi throughout the city, but are charged for using entertainment services or when exceeding download limits. The supply of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Ha Long is part of a wireless installation project in Quang Ninh province which targets to cover all townships and cities by 2015.

NCVW Flyer
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012
With two weeks to go before Cruise Lines International Association’s “World’s Largest Cruise Sale” during the second annual National Cruise Vacation Week (NCVW), almost 6,800 travel agents and agencies throughout the U.S. and Canada have registered to host more than 5,360 live and online events, topping last year’s total by almost 500 registrants. The 25 participating CLIA-member cruise lines continue to provide new special offers to help agents take full advantage of the cruise industry’s single-largest consumer promotion.

NCVW, from October 21-27, last year generated $55 million in cruise sales and more than $7 million in commissions. In addition to bonus commissions, CLIA member lines are helping to drive sales to NCVW-participating agents with consumer offers that include: savings up to $6,000 per couple, plus free air, or two-for-one pricing on luxury cruises; complimentary upgrades or shore excursions; $1,500 savings per stateroom for river cruises in Europe; and more.

CLIA-member agencies or those agencies that join CLIA this month may continue to register to host in-person or online NCVW events at ncvw.cruising.org. Online participants may register for their own customized, agency-specific, NCVW mini-websites, complete with a selection of cruise line promotional videos, special offers and other consumer incentives to cruise, which will be live all October.

CLIA’s NCVW site offers complete information about setting up the NCVW sites, as well as advice on hosting events, tips for agencies on how to promote their participation, and a broad selection of marketing and promotional tools and materials, including logos, press release templates, taglines, andpostcard and flyer templates. CLIA also will provide additional support to agencies through industry-wide publicity; national, regional and local media coverage; and other promotions.

Global Cruise Industry announces latest safety policy

Cruise Lines International Association
Cruise Lines International Association
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012
On behalf of the global cruise industry, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) and the European Cruise Council (ECC) today announced that the cruise industry has adopted an additional safety policy. This policy, which exceeds current international regulatory requirements, addresses issues related to the loading of lifeboats by crewmembers for training purposes. It is an outcome of the Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review, which was launched in January 2012.

The Life Boat Loading for Training Purposes policy requires the launching and full loading of a lifeboat at least once every six months for crew training purposes for all oceangoing members of CLIA and ECC, effective immediately. During the training, the lifeboat is filled to capacity with crewmembers and maneuvered in the water to facilitate familiarization with lifeboat operations. It is mandatory that all crewmembers involved in operating or loading of lifeboats attend the drill. Smaller ships with less than 300 crewmembers will conduct similar training as appropriate.

“The cruise industry continues to work on a global level to improve the safety of passengers and crew, which is our number one priority,” said Christine Duffy, president and CEO of CLIA. “Since January of this year, and in keeping with our efforts to continuously improve operational excellence, the global cruise industry has voluntarily adopted seven wide-ranging safety policies. We remain fully committed to exploring further enhancements in a number of areas that will add to the industry’s excellent safety record.”

Commenting on the new policy Manfredi Lefebvre, ECC Chairman said:
“The Cruise industry’s Operational Safety Review demonstrates our on-going determination to ensure that cruise ships remain the safest vacation option and the safest part of the shipping industry. This policy, like all the policies that have already been developed by the Operational Safety Review, exceeds current international regulatory requirements and has been externally verified by world renowned independent experts.”
He added: “Our industry is committed to improving our safety performance in the short, the medium and the long term I believe our approach supports the goal of European Commission of re-launching their ‘Quality Shipping Campaign’ as set out in its Maritime Policy 2009-2018.”

The Cruise Industry Operational Safety Review receives advice and input from a panel of outside maritime and safety experts. These individuals are evaluating suggested policy improvements as part of the cruise industry’s continuous efforts to review and improve safety measures by developing comprehensive best practices for industry-wide implementation and, ultimately, formal submission to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as appropriate. This policy will be submitted to the IMO for consideration at its next session in November.

A full version of the Life Boat Loading for Training Purposes policy can be accessed at http://www.cruising.org/regulatory/life-boat-loading-training-purposes-policy. All CLIA policies can be viewed at http://cruising.org/regulatory/cruise-industry-policies.

CLIA announced the launch of the Review on January 27, 2012. As part of the Review in February the global cruise industry instituted a new policy requiring mandatory emergency muster drills for embarking passengers prior to departure from port. In March, the industry put forth recommendations to the IMO supporting enhanced reporting requirements to improve the consistency and transparency of marine casualty data. In April, it announced three policies addressing issues related to passage planning, personnel access to the bridge and lifejackets. In June, the industry announced policies related to the recording of passenger nationality and the common elements of musters and emergency instructions. Additional best practices and policies developed through the Review will be announced and implemented on an ongoing basis.

Cruise tourism expects 35% growth next year

Cruise toursim
Cruise tourism
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012

Indonesia expects robust growth in cruise tourism next year with 300 calls already scheduled to visit the country’s ports, bringing some 160,000 passengers, a senior official said Wednesday.

The calls might still increase until the end of this year, Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry’s Meeting, Incentive, Convention, and Exhibition (MICE) director, Rizky Handayani, said.

“Cruise calls to Indonesia have been increasing over the past several years. It shows that we are a good market and a great destination, and surely have strong potential to grow further in this sector,” Rizky said on the sidelines of the ministry’s marketing coordinating meeting in Jakarta.

The expected number of tourists the cruise ships would bring next year — 160,000, would be a 35 percent increase from this year, which has received 200 cruise ship calls with 118,800 passengers visiting the country through the end of this year. Last year, the figure stood at 178 calls, bringing 112,000 passengers.

She said about 40 percent of cruise liners would visit Bali, 35 percent to West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, 13 percent to Java, and the rest would go to Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Maluku and Papua.

“Smaller cruise liners that only bring around 400 people usually visit exotic places in Maluku, Papua and Sulawesi,” she said.

The ministry has recently set up a task force consisting of the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, Transportation Ministry, state-owned port operator Pelindo, state- run shipping company Pelni, oil and gas company Pertamina, local governments, the Customs and Excise Office, and the Immigration Office, in hopes of bringing in more cruise liners and luxury yachts to Indonesia.

The task force has identified 10 ports across the country, such as Surabaya, East Java; Semarang, Central Java; Bali; Makassar; and Pare Pare in South Sulawesi, which would be developed to enable larger cruise ships to dock in the ports.

“We are working hard to finish the development of each port as soon as possible. We expect to finish the development of Benoa, one of the favorite cruise destinations, next year,” she said. Benoa is set to have a dedicated cruise terminal in the future. With all the developments taking place in every port, she was optimistic that Indonesia would be able to attract 600,000 passengers in 2016.

She also said that Indonesia had been participating in the world’s largest cruise exhibition, Cruise Shipping Miami, in the US, to promote cruise destinations across the archipelago.

Previously, Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said that Indonesia would collaborate with ASEAN countries through joint destinations so that the country could work together in joint packages such as from Singapore – Malaka – Aceh’s Weh Islet, or from Phuket Island in Thailand to Bali, and so on.

As of today, Indonesia has 70 points that can be entered by different types of cruise ships.

Asia Pacific, including Indonesia, is an exciting cruise market due to strong economic growth in the region.

Christine Duffy, president and CEO of the Cruise Lines International Association, described Asia as a gateway to tomorrow’s cruise marketplace, during the second annual Cruise Shipping Asia Pacific in Singapore last month.

Indonesia: Building Up for More Traffic

Cruise Halong Bay - Holland America Line
From Grayline Halong's Blog - October 2012
Indonesian ports expect to see 211 cruise ship calls and nearly 116,000 passengers this year, ranging from the 34-passenger True North to the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice. Next year’s forecast is for 228 calls and nearly 129,000 passengers, according to Noviendi Makalam, director of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. He said that itineraries between Singapore and Bali were ideal, using both destinations for embarkation.

In addition, and calling it a new trend, a spokesperson said there are more cruises within the Indonesian islands, including sailings offered by Seabourn and Silversea. Also, in 2014, he said, Holland America Line’s Rotterdam will sail roundtrip from Indonesia. The Rotterdam is slated to call at 10 Indonesian ports – seven where she can come alongside and three with tendering.

A three-year development program calls for preparing 11 Indonesian ports to be able to handle 3,000-passenger ships, and for a total of 25 ports to be able to handle ships in the 500 to 700 passenger range.

Efforts are also underway to “open cabotage” regulations, thus enabling ships to sail Eastern Indonesian itineraries from Bali, the spokesperson explained. This year, there are 16 turnarounds in Bali, including Crystal, Orion, Seabourn and Silversea.

Currently, the traffic is distributed among some 70 different ports and destinations in Indonesia, with the majority of the calls in Bali, Nusa, Tenggara and Java, according to Makalam.

Princess Cruises is the single largest with 17 percent of the passenger volume, followed by Holland America Line, with 18 percent, and Royal Caribbean International and Seabourn Cruise Line with 10 percent each.

The most frequent callers this year are the 100-passenger Orion with 54 calls and the Seabourn Legend with 28 calls.

Thirty-nine percent of the passengers are from North America, 32 percent from Australia, 26 percent from Europe, and 3 percent from Asia.
